Original watercolor painting, 'Early Autumn Forest', by Lynn Cyrus / Cascade Colors. I was inspired with this piece by a photograph I took while hiking the start of South Elbert trail, which is also part of the Colorado Trail, in early autumn of this year. The trail was passing through fairly dense aspen forest, and was descending into a small ravine which a stream was flowing through. Some of the leaves of the trees were beginning to turn golden yellow, although many trees were still green. However, much of the ground vegetation was turning color, including some bright red leaves on the slope above the trail. This stretch of forest lies on the slopes of the fourteener (14er) Mount Elbert, which rises above the Twin Lakes, between Leadville and Buena Vista. The heart of the Rocky Mountains!
