'Mount Massive in the Clouds', a landscape photograph by Lynn Cyrus / Cascade Colors. Mount Massive is a 14er mountain that rises tall outside of the mountain community of Leadville, in central Colorado. 14er's are popular hiking destinations, and are mountains which rise over 14,000 feet in elevation. Mount Massive is one of the tallest in Colorado. The summer growing season is very short above treeline, high in the alpine. Here, pink Elephant Head and creamy white Western Paintbrush wildflowers bloom in late July in a lush green meadow. Weather can change very rapidly at this elevation in the Rockies, and it is common for rain and thunderstorms to blow in by late morning in the summer months. Here, the beginnings of clouds are arriving.
