'Handie's Peak and Alpine Meadow', by Lynn Cyrus / Cascade Colors. Handie's Peak is a 14er (fourteener) in the San Juans range of the Rocky Mountains, in southwest Colorado near Lake City. 14er's are mountains with an elevation of 14,000 feet or greater, and are popular hiking destinations. Here, in mid July, these alpine meadows are completely snow free and are filled with lush grasses and wildflowers -- pink Rosy Paintbrush, cream-white Western Paintbrush, delicate white Western Bistort, and bright yellow Alpine Avens flowers. A narrow stream cascades down the slope of the meadow.
